WP 2

PROCESSES - Kinetics of degradation and metabolite formation

WP 2 will characterise existing micropollutant degraders regarding their potential to degrade the model micropollutants at the low contaminant concentrations targeted in this project. The degradation kinetics, including identification of threshold concentrations below which degradation is either absent or very slow, will be determined for selected organisms. It is hypothesised that bacteria with constitutively expressed degradation pathways possess a greater capacity to degrade micropollutants present in low concentrations than bacteria with inducible pathways. This is because the latter need to overcome threshold concentrations below which the necessary enzymes are not induced. The growth, survival and activity of the degrader cells in sand filters/barriers will then be determined. Specific degradation rates will be determined as these are of decisive importance for the modelling necessary to predict the long-term efficiency of the technologies. WP 2 will mainly focus on metabolic degradation processes, while a cometabolic strategy will be exploited in WP3.
