MODELS and PREDICTABILITY - Modelling and prediction of microbial degradation of organic xenobiotic compounds at low concentrations

To aid in the design, operation and optimisation of complex biotechnologies, mathematical modelling is invaluable. BIOTREAT will develop models describing removal of micropollutants in the µg/l range (0.1-10 µg/l) for both metabolic and cometabolic degradation processes. Model parameters will be 1) growth and survival parameters for degrading bacteria in sand filters, degradation rates, including threshold concentrations for degradation cosubstrate, effects on cometabolic degradation processes and other biotic and abiotic conditions such as diffusion limitation, advection and predation. The models will be valuable tools for optimising the design of sand filter reactors taking into consideration the short water retention time crucial for the practical application of the technology.
