WP 5

APPLICATION and RELIABILITY - Evaluation and adjustment of BIOTREAT systems for large scale applications

WP5 will focus on upscaling of the developed BIOTREAT technologies in order to test their reliability on a larger scale and eventually optimise the technology. The research will include the operation of larger lab-scale reactors with properly defined hydrodynamic and hydraulic conditions placed initially at one of the SME partners and later at waterworks. The research will allow us to estimate which up-scaling effects have to be taken into account when transferring our findings in WP1-WP3 from small scale lab BIOTREAT systems to larger scale BIOTREAT systems and whether the technology has to be adjusted to accommodate performance on a larger scale.

Moreover, WP5 will allow to validate and eventually adjust pollutant removal models from WP4 to larger scale systems. Those systems will be operated by one of the SME partners in cooperation with scientific partners. Two systems are anticipated. The first system is a submerged fixed bed biofilm reactor that treats pesticide-contaminated groundwater at high flow rates for drinking water production by means of metabolic processes. The second system is a fixed bed biofilm reactor for treating water contaminated with low concentrations of pharmaceuticals by means of cometabolic processes.
